Scalloping in Crystal River is fun for all ages, something the whole family can enjoy together. Youngsters with good swimming abilities can participate by snorkeling on the surface and scouting for the unmistakable shape of a scallop shell on the bottom. However diving for scallops may require a more experienced swimmer. Although you are snorkeling in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico, collecting scallops will require swimmers to dive down five to eight feet deep. A guide will join you in the water to assist in spotting the scallops, and instruct you on how to collect them. Recreational scalloping is limited to two gallons per person and no more than ten gallons per boat. This will amount to around a pint of scallop meat per person. Our Captains can give you some pointers on how to prepare and cook these tasty morsels as well as recommend some local seafood restaurants that will cook them for you!
Scalloping season runs from July 1st until the third week in September each year. Scalloping charters are only offered during this short window of time in an effort to conserve the harvest for years to come. Not only does your guide know the best scalloping spots, but everything that you need for an awesome day on the water is provided on your Crystal River scallop charter.
